Librarians are very informative, extremely helpful and friendly.
I'm amazed For a small town the library is well stocked with up to date books.
The DVD movie "club" is insulting and oppressive. All those movies, an impressive collection, were likely donated to that library or purchased with our tax dollars. They are ours, publicly ours. You can only check them out for a few days and they charge you to be in the club. For someone out of town it is difficult to show up every few days to return a movie that I have paid to watch.
This place is not an academic environment. Lots of electronics and televisions and talking. Very annoying. Also, the wifi is not working much anymore. It is very slow. You ask at the desk and they look at you sideways and say, "I guess I can go randomly reboot a bunch of servers or modems or routers or whatever they are...." They go away, clomping LOUDLY. The network shuts down. Wifi comes back up, is fast for a minute or two (until all the viruses and various other infections fire up on the servers likely) then it slows back down to 1 mbps. They have a couple dozen computers in a room, most of them are free, but you can only use them for an hour or so at a time, even if no one is waiting to use one. Silly. Why are we even paying for all of this if it doesn't work and we are not allowed to use it? Who is running this place?
So, why tolerate it? Extremely fast wifi, when it works, which is most of the time. Also the staff is helpful, sort of, if you need them. But they are so loud in helping I often resist asking for any help so that I do not contribute to the unlibraryness of it all.
This is a very noisy library, at times insanely so. It is not only the guests, which can sit around the lounge area and incessantly chatter about meaningless things, but the staff too. I am not sure if they are volunteers or what, but they are LOUD. They not only do not understand that a library is a quite place of reading and learning, or that they should not talk in full voice at all, but they are constantly having personal conversations and banter in a very oblivious and LOUD manner. You cannot sneer and clear throat enough to give them hints, in fact it seems to egg them on. Shameful.
